The Theory For this observation paper, I chose to focus on the communication accommodation theory. Specifically, I observed the convergence which takes place within the classroom within the two graduate courses which I am enrolled in this semester. CAT is “a strategy whereby individuals adapt their communication so that their visual, vocal and/or verbal behaviors becomes more similar to their partner’s behavior” (Giles & Wadleigh, 2008, p. 493).
The Observation
I observed student behaviors with Professor Marcia Dixson and Professor Irwin Mallin’s graduate level courses. Both classes meet at the same time of day within identical rooms. While both instructors employ active learning techniques, their teaching methods vary slightly. During my observations, I noticed a key difference in the nonverbal behaviors between the two classes. The differences which I noticed was involving most students, including myself. I noticed that my, as well as many other students, posture is different between the two courses.
Marcia's Class - Sat up straight
Irwin's Class - Slouching in their seats
The Conclusion I noted that Marcia spends a great deal of time walking and standing in the classroom. While doing so, she stands with straight posture. When Marcia sits, she sits with straight posture. Irwin typically sits during class with a very relaxed posture. I feel that students adjust their own posture to more closely match the posture of the professor who they are focusing on.
